Get to know us, our culture, how it all started and how we care for one another.

We are the artisans of Sandlund/Hossain

Our two main HQs are located in Härnösand, Sweden, and Dhaka, Bangladesh. All the staff working in our Bangladesh studio have proper salaries, paid vacation, sick leave and a savings program, and are provided with education.

All these things should be certainties for any company in the industry today, but unfortunately this isn’t the case. That’s why we hope to inspire others by telling them how we operate:

Want to know more about our working conditions? That makes us happy.

A PROPER SALARY & THE ABILITY TO NEGOTIATE

Our employees in Bangladesh have proper salaries, whether you work as a helper, craftsman, operator or something else. The average initial salary in our industry in Bangladesh is 4 850 bdt per month – the average salary at Sandlund/Hossain is 8 550 dbt, almost twice a as high.

We’ve also set up a goal to increase the salaries, and to double it over three years. We’re now on our third year and has increased the salaries with ca. 20% per year. We also offer paid vacation and sick leave.

But the most important thing of all is that the salary increment is discussed every year together with employees and management. The employees are welcomed to present their proposal and to negotiate. Decisions are always made with a priority of understanding.

SAVINGS PROGRAM

We have our own savings program for every employee, because we believe long term planning and thinking is important.

This is how it works:
– Every employee have the ability to deposit 200 bdt every month as savings.
– Sandlund/Hossain will match 25% of the amount in the first year, 50% the second year, 75% the third year and 100% in the fourth year.

OVERTIME WITH PAYMENT

If it’s needed to work more than regular time or in a holiday or weekend it is considered overtime work. Overtime work payment is twice the regular basic hourly salary.

EDUCATION

We educate all our staff in writing and reading. Our general manager and teacher Flora Moshina provides the education. We consider it to be our responsibility to educate and teach, not only great craftsmen, but also to empower our employees.

A family Affair

We got to know each other way back, thanks to our parents. Both of us come from small villages with rather uncompromising yet practical people – Bagatipara in Bangladesh, and Böle in Sweden. In 1899, Anders’ great grandfather founded Böle Tannery, a family business that’s now been up and running for four generations.

Back in the 70s, Anders’ parents, Inger and Jan, left Sweden to do volunteer work with an NGO, The Swallows, in Bangladesh. This is where they met Tulin’s parents, Atiq and Dolly, eventually becoming best friends and co-workers.

Today, Sandlund/Hossain is rooted in the heritage and techniques of the tannery in Böle. But most importantly, we carry forward our parents’ philosophies on social development and the importance of caring for each other.
